Practical, goal-led Conductive Education at home and close to home. It’s an education-based approach to the everyday movements that matter to you, and it works alongside your NHS care.
Who it’s for
Whether your diagnosis is recent or you’ve lived with it for years, we start from your goals, not your label.
Working on everyday tasks: standing up, walking, and using your affected arm and hand in daily routines, whether your stroke was recent or years ago.
Rhythm, counting and big, deliberate movements are at the heart of Conductive Education. We use them to practise getting started, turning, standing up, walking and handwriting.
Sessions paced around fatigue: balance, getting in and out of chairs and bed, and staying active day to day.
Structured practice of real tasks, with support for planning, sequencing and confidence as well as movement.
Support often thins out once children’s services end. Sessions to keep moving well and adapt routines as your body changes.
Including ataxia, PSP and MSA. Ask us. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll tell you honestly.
How we work with you
We work on the actual tasks you want to do: standing up from your own chair, walking to the front door, writing a birthday card. Each movement is broken into steps, said out loud and counted through, so it’s easier to plan and repeat.
Sessions are active and can be tiring, so we pace them for you. You’ll finish each one with a short, practical routine for the days in between.
Family members and carers are welcome in every session. We’ll show you simple ways to encourage movement between visits, without taking over.
Your safety comes first. Before we start, we’ll ask about your health, medication and any advice from your GP or NHS team. We work alongside your NHS team, not instead of it. If you have new or worsening symptoms, please speak to your GP first.
Before you get in touch
Plenty of people come to Conductive Education after NHS rehab has ended, sometimes years later. Everyone is different and we can’t promise particular results, but there’s usually something worth working on, and we’ll be honest with you about what’s realistic.
Yes. Send the enquiry yourself and choose “A family member” in the form, once they’re happy for you to share their details. We’ll talk with them as well as with you, because the goals have to be theirs. If they can’t decide for themselves, we follow the Mental Capacity Act, as our safeguarding page explains.
No. You can contact us yourself. A family member, your NHS team, a case manager or a care home can also refer you, with your permission.
No. Conductors are specialist educators, not physiotherapists. Physiotherapy and Conductive Education work well side by side, and with your permission we’re glad to share goals with your physio.
Sometimes. If your agreed support plan includes goals we can help with, your social worker may agree to a Direct Payment being used for sessions. See funding options.
